Encounter Arts’s founder and artistic associate Ruth Ben-Tovim gives a workshop during the
Nyland Forum. Encounters is a company of artists, producers, facilitators and change agents.
Encounters projects are creating the conditions for a creative, caring, connected world in which
all can learn to flourish, living together within the Earth’s ecological limits. Three days’
workshop, open for people who want to know more about working with arts practise in
economic, social and ecological transitions.

12.30
Talerstol (Rostrum)– the first speech
Robbert van der Horst (NL) visited the Woodmuseum in Oddense and learned about traditional
wood constructions from Ole Brauner and his colleagues. The techniques are used to build the
Talerstol together with students from Marienlyst. Citizens from Skive and participants to the
Nyland Forum will be asked to give speeches, addressing the cows and reflecting on the
landscape.  The speeches will be recorded and published.

12.45
Talende Jord (take out: performace by Tina Andersen)
Talende Jord (Talking Soil) is an installation created by Tina Andersen. She visited three farmers in the Selling-area, as the area around Skive, whom she interviewed. They told her about their relation with the soil and how they work with it. The interviews are transformed in texts. Tina asked women who know the soil to read the text: as soil as female. Three heaps of soil on a table tells the text.  They speak softly. The visitor as invited to bow towards the text and listen.

Building Bridges I
English
Let’s begin this dialogue by asking what the situation is in the different European rural areas.
What is the current economic, social, ecological and cultural situation? What is the situation in
Midtjylland / Mid Jutland? Do they see the same gaps between people from different sectors? Is
the countryside – as Rem Koolhaas says – the new frontline of transitions. How do these
transitions influence lives in the countryside in Europe and here in Skive? What are the values
that we want to keep? What does cultural heritage mean to us?
We notice growing gaps between different groups of people in our society. Many people feel
unheard and unseen. More and more people do not take part in the welfare that we have in
Northern Europe. How to re-connect different sectors in our society? Can we bridge the
democratic, economic, cultural and ecological gaps? Can art be a cross-connector?

Building bridges II
Let’s talk further on the issues of the former dialogue with a focus on the work of artists who
work in areas where transitions are at stake. Not only in the countryside but also in fragile
neighbourhoods of towns. How do artists work in these transition areas. How to get connected
to people who (often) didn’t ask for art, how to build up trust, how to dig deeper and find social,
economic, cultural layers in the communities? And how to transform the information into
contemporary art. What does ‘working on an equal level in participatory art practise’ mean?

Speakers:

Simone Bech Citizen from Aasted and every-day-expert
Ruth Ben-Tovim Encounters (UK)
Trine Rytter Andersen Artist, participative and collaborative art works (DK)

Keynote by André Schaminee
“Working with arts and social design on wicked problems”
Andre Schaminee recently published his book with the title “Designing with and within Public
Organisations”. Many contemporary societal issues, as we notice them in the countryside and our
towns, have grown to be too complex to solve with traditional approaches. Social design
practices increasingly appeal to public organisations as a new and promising approach. But we
have to acknowledge that there are vast differences between the approaches of the public sector
and designers/artists and citizens. We sometimes seem to speak completely different languages.
What are the basics for understanding each other? Schaminee introduces the main principals of

the art of context building – creating and maintaining the right context within public
organisations and with the public for an honest, thorough and yet manageable design process.
André works for the ministry of infrastructure, ministry of internal affairs, city of Amsterdam,
Rotterdam, housing corporations, water councils, contractors and many others.

11.00 – 13.00
FOOD
The Future is Rural
What is the future of Skive and its surroundings? Will the villages see a further de-population?
Will we still have pig-farmers or are the proteins in the future coming from insects and worm-
farming. And what is the future for the inhabitants. The European Commission came up with a
new policy “Smart Villages”. How to use the personal capacities of the people in the villages and
how to use digitalisation? Does this process bring new work and new inhabitants to the rural? Or
will robots and drones take over the work and does the countryside then become an empty place?
Is digitalisation the end of the food-production by farmers? Or is small scale, biological farming
on a human scale better for the planet, the people and the animals? And if art is working with
imagination, can art help us to imagine a (better and more sustainable) future?

Speakers;

Stefan Ostergard Jensen – European Commission, Danish AgriFish Agency – Ministry of
Environment and Food.
Steffen Damsgaard – Chairman of Landdistrikternes Fællesråd

WOOD
Traditional crafts, modern designers, new jobs
The Grasslands project of 2017 in the villages Selde, Junget, Aasted and Thorum continues with
the project STOL. The project’s starting point is the request of the villagers to research how the
art project could help to create jobs for young people. How could the knowledge and crafts of
the older generation and current designers, who worked in the furniture industry or live in the
area, be used to create jobs for young people. How can artists and designers help to create jobs?
What are the conditions for creating a sustainable, small wood-industry?

Speakers:

Frank Petersen – Business Consultant, SET Skive Municipality
Jan Sørensen – Designer, owner of the furniture company MULTIKA
Andreas Svane – Ship carpenter
Andre Schaminee – keynote of today and advisor, Twijnstra Gudde
Ida Viborg – young local artist

Excursion to Grasslands
In the dialogue “Building Bridges”, we heard how art can work as a cross-connector, how artists
work with participative art practice and so on. This excursion brings you to the villages Selde,
Junget, Aasted and Thorum where villagers and artists welcome you and tell about the process of
creating the art works, their mutual expectations and experiences.
Old buildings with a new future
Gamle bygninger/nye muligheder
The development of the countryside has emptied an abundance of buildings, such as shops,
stables, town halls, factories, of their original functions. Often spaces, that have had central
importance for everyday life exactly there. And often spaces, when empty, stand out as deviating
and beyond normal. That’s a challenge that contains a huge potential for empowering new
creativity and new life.

WOOD (English)
Our culture is us.
A special focus on the cultural heritage of the Salling area. The ship building wharfs, the furniture
factories once were economic drivers and are still famous in the world. Not only the woodwork
results are the cultural heritage of Salling: also the craftsmanship of the designers and workers
can be seen as intangible heritage.
Do we keep these crafts alive, do young people learn them, is there a future for these crafts and
knowledge? The unique Træmuseum in Oddense inspires contemporary artists. The project
STOL and the project Talerstol are contemporary art project, based on the knowledge, the crafts,
the cultural heritage of the area. Let’s hear how cultural heritage and contemporary art cooperate;

Speakers:

Ole Brauner, craftsman – Træmuseet Oddense
Lene Noer artist, Project STOL
Peter Nyby, Chairmaker and designer
Robbert van der Horst artist, creator of Talerstol
John Bertelsen, Chairman of Fur Developpement Counsil

11.00 – 12.00
FOOD (danish)
A Super Dry Summer and our daily food.
This summer was super dry. Is it once in the 100 years? Or is this the result of climate change
and will it happen often? How did this infect the work and live of farmers and other food
producers? Can they survive if this happens again? How did we produce our food? What did we
eat? And what did it cost?
Farmers do not earn more for their products than 20 years ago whereas their costs have increased
Thanks to large scale farming? Can this go on? What changes are needed? And how is the
landscape doing? By a declining bio-diversity we are losing cultural heritage: plants, insects,
animals. And how is the soil doing? Tina Andersen visited five farmers how they use their land
and their connection with it. She will tell about her project “Jorden har ordet”.

Speakers:

Bettina Buhl Food – historian, director of Det Grønne Museum
Arne Bisgaard Farmer, Chairman of the village committee, member of the board of
